bbbbbbBeyond the Books is a weekly meme hosted right here at KBK. Beyond the Blog is a weekly meme where I throw out a topic (mostly non-bookish), and you guys blog about it. Come back here and share the link to your blog post, and we all have fun learning about each other. For more information and future topics click click here.

This week we are talking about the worst reasons we have ever purchased or read a book.

Yea buying books is a problem for lots of us. I have all kinds of reasons for wanting to read a book most are for good reasons, some are just dumb.

Holy crap! I just realized this is another opportunity for a list. I have done one in a while (j/k, i did one three days ago). I have a plethora of reasons. Some are obvious traps, some are just dumb on my part.

the cover was so pretty

tumblr_n11rd7YdUe1qizfbso2_500I have fallen for this so many times. I am a bit of a cover whore.

i wanted to prove a review wrong

eminem_quote-1233this usually is because of pretty cover, but low ratings. i should know better

i needed to make one more purchase to get free shipping/a bigger discount

Dumb-Chelsea-Handlerpretty dumb! apparently.

i thought i remember it mentioned somewhere, by someone

tumblr_m61sb2szcZ1r6lkwrshould’ve paid closer attention, they hated the book

it was on sale or free

7377799/10 there is a reason it is so cheap

i am going to want to read this eventually

tumblr_m41qmao9fa1qjwfxmthat’s me looking at books i want to OWN and maybe, someday, read

That’s all I can think of for now.

I would love to hear about the worst reasons you have ever read or purchased a book.

Guilty of “it was cheap” and “i want to prove a review wrong”. The worst is that these books end up lying around in my house anyways because I don’t really have any desire to actually read them. Cheap books aren’t always good books and good books aren’t always cheap.

I have a ton of free/cheap books that will I will never read. Most of them were acquired when I first started my book blog. If I ever stop reviewing, I will still have enough books for a lifetime of reading.

Oh I love this list – not just for the reasons but excellent use of gifs! But I am guilty of all of these. Covers and sales get me every time! Also the I thought I heard it mentioned by someone, somewhere – yup. I have the worst memory and have totally picked up the wrong book because of it. Fun topic!!

This was a hard one for me to write, since i don’t buy, which leaves out a lot of these reasons.
New header looks perfect…but…it still gets all weird when I scroll down. It’s almost like it’s showing all the layers of the different versions that have been up there. It shows just the new blue box w/ lips & text on top of little pieces of all the old header graphics.

Hm, that is strange. I don’t think this is the final header for me. I found a bunch of brushes for Gimp and I have been playing around a lot with them. So much that it is cutting into me reading plans for the week. It’s one thing or another for me.

So if you just tell them why you DNF it counts as a “review” toward the ratio?

This was a great post, I fall into the “it was cheap/free” category A LOT 🙁

I bought a book yesterday because the cover is damaged and it was marked down 25%. I’m also very guilty of buying more books to qualify for free shipping. Amazon will say, “Add $15 to this order to get free shipping.” And, I’ll say, “Okay!”

You should get Amazon Prime. It has already paid for itself with the shipping being free for Prime products. I get caught up in discounts on Book Outlet a lot.

LOL! I’m pretty sure I’ve done all of these except for to prove a review wrong but I’m contrary enough that I full understand that desire. Your gifs are perfection by the way. I haven’t gotten into trouble adding books for free shipping in awhile thanks to Prime but I spend enough money at other places that it kills me. But rather more stuff than pay shipping.

Yeah for Prime! I have deleted entire orders and gone elsewhere due to shipping costs. Prime has talked me into buying tons of books (free shipping!)

  8. Silvara September 10, 2015 at 4:23 pm - Reply

I’m totally guilty about the “pretty cover” books. It’s why I read The Selection in the first place! I also have problems with free books, and books that I remember friends talking about. Usually I don’t remember WHY they were talking about them and yeah… *laughs* And the bigger discount/minimum total to ship I fall guilty of the most. Though admittedly it’s not always books in those cases. Last night I added like 5 skeins of yarn to a purchase because I needed to meet a ‘minimum’ order total…And I HAVE Amazon Prime, I just really wanted this add-on item. *patented wide-eyed innocent look*

I love your list and the gifs! I am guilty of buying because of pretty covers, sales and freebies. I just can’t help it!! So far I’ve been lucky with the freebies. I’ve loved it so much I bought the next book from the author.

Lucky you! I have been gravely disappointed one too many times with freebies. The sales are still safe for me though.

Bwhahah I LOVE this! It’s all SO true. I have absolutely done each and every one of these! I love the one where you remember hearing about it, only to get it home, look at Goodreads, and see that the reason you remember it is because it has like, 2.4 stars and everyone you know basically ranted and raged over it. And I am a sucker for a pretty cover too. I love these so much!!
