Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right here at KBK. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where I throw out a topic (mostly non-bookish), and you guys blog about it. Come back here and share the link to your blog post, and we all have fun learning about each other. For more information and future topics click here.

Do you remember getting your first car?

I do! (although, admittedly it was a loooong time ago) I couldn’t wait to get my own car when I was sixteen. I had this idea that I would be able to go anywhere and do anything once I got some wheels. When I was sixteen I worked at Wendy’s and a co-worker had a car she wanted to sell for $300. People tried to tell me this was a bad idea. A $300 car is full of problems. I wouldn’t hear it, $300 was something I could afford and I really wanted a car of my own. The seller made it clear the car had some issues, but I was so excited I didn’t care.

My first car was a (piece of shit) 1983 Pontiac Grand Prix.

My $300 first car had awesome features, such as:

  • No car stereo
  • No ignition
  • No cover on the glove box
  • No key for the trunk
  • The car leaked when it rained
  • The a/c didn’t work
  • One window crank for both windows (in florida heat that just sucked)

I used to start my car with a big ass flat-head screw driver. I wish I was kidding. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that the car had roaches (they are really common in florida, not in cars per se, but they were in that car). I could write a book about how embarrassing this car was. I kept reminding myself it was only temporary. That car lasted me about six months before it left me stranded on a lonely highway. Being stranded on a highway is scary for anyone, for a first time driver it is terrifying. I am still emotionally scarred by the experience.

Let me be clear and say that not maybe not all Pontiacs were pieces of shit, but the the two I owned both were. I later owned a Grand Am and it leaked like crazy. It was a pretty green color, but I grew to hate that car. I am almost glad Pontiacs are not longer on the market.

Today I Own Two Cars

Technically I have five vehicles. My Miguel and I have 3 cars and 2 motorcycles between us. I’ve come a long way babee!

I am currently leasing a 2016 VW Passat.

You can’t tell by looking at this picture, but the Passat is the biggest car in it’s class (mid-sized sedan). It has so much leg room in the back, which is great because I have a 15 year old that is 6’2″. This car starts every time I get into it and it has a nice stereo. That’s all I need really. I mean remote start is nice, but for a lease this is great.

I also own a 2008 Saturn Outlook.

It is almost exactly the same as the GMC Arcadia or the Chevrolet Traverse that are still being sold today. My Saturn seats 8 people. That is perfect since my family is HUGE and my kids always want to take a friend when we go somewhere. My Saturn has been out of commission since the Florida tags expired in May. I am going to get Connecticut tags for it tomorrow since we fit it in the budget this month. I actually can’t wait to drive it again. My Saturn has the one thing the Passat is missing… remote start! Unfortunately, it has stereo issues, but I guess I can’t have everything. It runs pretty good and it’s paid for. That’s more than I can say about my Passat (or my Harley).

I don’t really care about what my car looks like, as long as it works. All the other stuff is fluff as far as I am concerned.

What was your first car?

Also, are you a little surprised I didn’t talk about my motorcycle only this whole post? I am trying to keep you on your toes.
