Beyond the Books is a weekly feature hosted right here at KBK. Beyond the Books is a weekly writing prompt where I throw out a topic (mostly non-bookish), and you guys blog about it. Come back here and share the link to your blog post, and we all have fun learning about each other. For more information and future topics click click here.
Today we are talking about WHY we started blogging.
I swear I have shared this story before. Oh well! Get comfortable, I will try to keep this short, but…you know me!
When my youngest son was born he spent 137 in the NICU of the hospital. In that time, I continued working, started studying nursing, and had to go to parent functions for my other children. A lot of people we knew, knew about lil Edgar and they were devastated by his predicament. Everyone always asked about the baby. How is the baby? What do the doctors say? How are you holding up? How are you and Miguel? It was EXHAUSTING to give family/friends/co-workers those updates all the time. Sometimes the news wasn’t good, sometimes I found it hard to talk about it.
Lucky for us, the hospital offered us a “care page” to write about all of Edgar’s updates. (click here if you want to read through his journey. you should probably start around page 13 and work your way back) This was something we used to communicate all of Edgar’s highs and lows. This was my first introduction to blogging. I started writing everything in those posts. I used it to vent, I used it to celebrate, and I used it to stay sane.
Once I stopped updating those care pages, I found I missed writing everyday. I knew blogging was a “thing”, so I searched free blogging sites and I started one of my own. I was completely overwhelmed with my situation and blogging about it helped me to find a groove and a balance. I did a lot of writing on my site and honestly, I assumed no one even read it. It felt good to write and honestly, I didn’t care if people read it or not. But, people did read it and eventually, some online stores found me and they offered to send me products in exchange for product reviews. So then I reviewed products for a few years, but my real love was when people offered me books to review. After a while, I shut the whole thing down so I could take a break.
I took about 2 years off, but I stayed current with WordPress and my domains by doing a round up site. I MISSED blogging so much. Not being able to blog drove me crazy. Blogging is something I do for ME. I started blogging books exclusively in May 2014. It is so cool to be able to share my love for book and writing with you people!!! I feel like this is perfect for me and I am at home blogging books. Time has flown by since then. It doesn’t seem at all like I am coming up on two years of book blogging. I am happy to say I have enjoyed every minute of it.
I started blogging because it keeps me sane. I started book blogging because books are my passion.
