If you love The Lunar Chronicles, you should NOT MISS reading Fairest. It actually answered some questions (like the relationship between Winter, Princess Celene aka Cinder, and Levana). I get the whole family tree and why Princess Winter and Princess Celene will have trouble deciding who gets to rule Luna.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall.Who is the Fairest of them all?

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her "glamour" to gain power. But who is Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story--a story that has never been told . . . until now.

New York Times -bestselling author Marissa Meyer reveals the story behind her fascinating villain in Fairest, an unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes a special full-color image of Levana's castle and an excerpt from Winter, the exciting conclusion to The Lunar Chronicles.

Why did I wait so long to read this? I must be crazy. This book (not novella) is only 222 pages. I finished it in one day. It was so easy to read and to took me back to my happy reading place. I am so ready for Winter now.

It is not required reading for the series. I think that readers get a lot out of this book though. If you are a fan, you probably shouldn’t miss it. Plus, it was really good. Marissa Meyer is just so easy to read. I don’t see how you would call yourself a Lunar Chronicles fan, and not read this book.

Fairest is going to tell you what Lavana really looks like. Why glamour is part of her personality. It is going to explain why she obliviously wicked. Levana had a really shitty thing happen to her. She made some stupid mistakes, she started off innocent. She fell in love with someone who didn’t/couldn’t love her back. She was mistreated and left out.

I could really sympathize with her.

Not completely, understand me. Levana still makes my skin crawl and I want her dead. But, I get her a lot more now. I can see why she unleashed Leumatosis, (did I spell that right?). I loved that somehow the author could evoke sympathy for someone so awful. This book is brilliant. I mean, I love the whole series so far, but this book really showed the brilliance of the author.

Obviously, the whole story takes place on Luna, so there has to be a lot of world building. Luna is incredibly complex and yet easy to understand. The Lunar Royalty themselves are all inherently evil. This is made quite clear time and again with their social interactions, motivations, and the way they treat the help. Not all Lunars are like that, but those in power seem to be vicious. Cunning and thick skin is a requirement for any royal child. All I have to say now is that we are all lucky that Cinder was raised on earth instead of on Luna.

So in conclusion, this book (not novella) was excellent and answered a lot of questions. It shows how bad parenting trickles down. Sibling rivalry can be deadly. You can’t make someone love you. And it shows the family tree of the royal family on Luna. It was a nice way to explain how some people fit into the picture. Now I need me some WINTER!
