Congratulations on your decision to start a new blog!
Welcome to the blogging world. I hope you will find everyone here welcoming and supportive. If not, ignore those people. We probably don’t like them either, keep looking for nice people. My number one piece of advice for you is to Comment on other blogs. You will make friends that way.
I am not going get too technical about where to blog. I have already done that here and here. I strongly recommend you buy your domain, and pay for hosting. But if you can’t/don’t want to/are afraid to take the plunge, I totally understand.
Create a name for yourself and an icon of sorts and use it everywhere. Post your own pictures. I know that not all of us are photographers, but using other people’s pictures gets tricky because there are copyright laws that can get you into trouble. Don’t use Google images if you can help it, even citing the source won’t save you if you “steal” a photo. You can be sued. It is not worth the risk. There are sites where you can buy photos, use them. Your best bet is to use your own photos. You can also make your own graphics using Canva or Gimp. I personally use both.
Get on twitter, and instagram if you are ambitious, and comment and like away. You will make friends there. Try to interact with other bloggers in your niche by sharing their content and/or responding to them on social media.
Blast your content onto social media. I use a plug-in called Tweetily for that. Speaking of plug-ins, I posted a list of WordPress plug-ins I find useful here. I posted more plug-ins here. You can also look around other blogs for their blogging resource page. A lot of bloggers publish advice.
Also, please look at your site and see if it looks good. Read your content and fix any mistakes you find. Please don’t use a black background with white writing, it will hurt your reader’s eyes. If you look at your content often enough you will want to make it more visually appealing.
Not sure where to start? How about an introduction post with 20 questions and answers? Talk about your passion, bitch about your life, share a secret, tell a story, whatever. Put some posts up. Hold a giveaway. Get social, tell people about your blog. Most of all, have fun with it. It may take some time to get a lot of posts up, but when you get ideas away from your computer jot them down to write about later.
‘Do you’ on your blog. If you want to share your whole life, do that. Someone will find you entertaining. Stick to things you know and don’t try to copy anyone. However, if someone inspires you to try something new that’s okay. Give them credit for their idea. There are a ton of weekly or monthly memes you can hop on if you run out of content or want to join in. I suggest you do at least one and try it out. Try them all out if you want, but be original in your posts.
A big bonus to being an established blogger is the opportunity to try things before they are even available to the public. Companies want blogger’s opinions so they can gauge their marketing, to help create a buzz for something new, or if they need to take the product back to drawing board. Loads of bloggers review products and it is not that hard to get free stuff in exchange for an honest opinion. You will need to add a disclaimer to your site if you plan to do this, but we can get to that later. You may find contact information for companies who send out free products by perusing other blogs.
If you run out of ideas of what to blog completely, go back to the beginning. Look at other blogs. Look to your community for more niche specific ideas. I find a lot of inspiration on other blogs. While you are there leave a comment. You will make friends.
Good luck on your new blog!
